Lately, it seems everyone in this industry is yearning to learn how to operate their businesses in this struggling economy. At least, that’s the impression I get from the topic of many industry educational opportunities.
For example, I attended NPMA’s Academy 2009 a few weeks ago and the theme for Academy was, “Growing Your Business in Challenging Times.” In addition, the upcoming University of Kentucky Pest Control Short Course in September has the theme, “Thriving in Tough Times.”
I attended another meeting recently where this was also an underlying theme. Of course, I can only deduce that the reason so many opportunities exist for PMPs to learn how to operate in a down economy is because PMPs are interested in this topic.
Last year (June 2008), marketing guru and PMP columnist Harvey Goldglantz wrote his column, “Dealing with the ‘R’ Word.” It was an interesting column that offered good advice to PMPs at a time when most were beginning to realize the economy may have an effect on their businesses.
Harvey followed that up last November with another column, “When the Going Gets Tough …” In that piece, he outlined some of the lessons PMPs can learn from the many entrepreneurs who were able to make money during The Great Depression.
Finally, I want to point you in the direction of a feature Harvey wrote for us just this past March. “The Big Picture,” encourages PMPs to not simply survive in a recession, but to thrive in a recession. It’s certainly possible, as Harvey illustrates in the article.
As it seems everyone is putting together educational programs on this topic, I wanted to put in my two cents and point out these three excellent articles that ran in Pest Management Professional magazine over the past year.
